I wasn’t told until it happened. I had no idea what was going on really but on some level I knew it was something natural. I was at home from school for lunch and told my mum, who sorted me out with the goodies. I remember she’d obviously told Dad – nothing was ever said but he came and cupped his hand round my face so tenderly. His beloved little girl was growing up.

I’m so pleased that your problems were finally affirmed and have been thinking of you during your recovery from the op.

PS: I just remembered: when I was told that this unwanted hair was something that happened during puberty, I naturally assumed it would go away again after I’d gone through puberty. Logical, really. I waited a long time…
