This is excellent.

I was thinking about the abstinence thing the other day because my daughter and I have been watching Gilmore Girls. The episode in which the minister talks to Rory about her “virtue” really struck me.

This idea that one’s virginity is a gift that needs to be guarded is really anachronistic and I think that is probably obvious to most young people even if they can’t articulate it. This particular framing only makes sense in a society in which women & children are basically teh property of their husbands and thus women’s purpose is to bear children/heirs FOR her husband. And her (economic) value is in her ability to do this. There’s also stuff about family honour tied up in that.

That doesn’t mean we should just have sex with whoever. Certainly, there is value in waiting for a situation in which you are respected, and the experience will be pleasurable. But it is pretty clear that it is possible to have respectful, pleasurable, and loving sex with more than one person in your lifetime.

Sure, advise kids not to rush into it. But give them good information about how to negotiate good sex, what respect looks like, and how to prevent disease and pregnancy.

Well said! I completely agree with you. While I was raised in a religious household, my mom always gave me this spiel:

Don’t have sex.
…if you have sex, use protection.
…if you don’t use protection and you get pregnant, don’t have an abortion. Tell me and we’ll take care of you and the baby.
…but please don’t have sex.

This advice didn’t compromise the morals she was trying to impart, but she was realistic and covered all the consequence bases – both positive and negative.
